After driving through the Tunnel of Trees that was planted over 100 years ago you will arrive in what is sometimes called Old Koloa Town.
Koloa was the site of the first sugar plantation in the Hawaiian Islands. King Kamehameha III leased the land to Duncan McBryde in 1835. Koloa Town supported the thriving sugar plantations and the whaling and sandalwood industries on Kauai for years. Almost all of the original buildings remain and now house modern-day restaurants and shops.
Koloa is one of best places to shop on the island. The shops in Old Koloa Town have a real plantation feel that will pull you in as you take a leisurely stroll along the boardwalk. While shopping or walking off a diner from one of the local restaurants you can not miss the gigantic Banyan tree planted in the early 1900?s
Today Koloa has become the gateway to the Sunny South side of the island also known as Poipu, where sun, golf and snorkeling are all just steps away from many of the ocean side condos or homes along the coast.
Often one will refer to Poipu as the Sunny South side, Poipu is a wonderland for anything that works well in sun shine. With the pristine blue waters and sunshine nearly everyday you will certainly want to take in the many beaches from Shipwrecks Beach to Brennecke's Beach where you may very well soak in some rays with the popular yet critically endangered Hawaiian Monk Seals that often join the crowd.
